The Group

Our research focusses on analytical and numerical modeling of mechanical systems and corresponding experiments. Current topics include the sensing of fluid properties (density, viscosity, viscoelasticity) by quantifying its interaction with a vibrating system, and at the small scale and higher frequencies (MHz), we work on modeling and design of devices for ultrasonic particle manipulation.  Also wave propagation in structures is studied as well as gravitational interaction of vibrating systems

This basic work is applied to the determination of vibrational characteristics of water turbines, applications in biochemistry and medical analysis, as well as snow mechanics.

In most of these endeavors we rely on the combination of computational (ANSYS, COMSOL, ABAQUS, our own programs), experimental (optical methods, clean room fabrication, …) and analytical methods. Therefore collaboration with academia, industry as well as the common ETH research infrastructure (FIRST lab: www.first.ethz.ch)  is an indispensable ingredient in our research.
